CHICAGO (Feb. 12, 2020) – The first two friendly matches of the spring for the U.S. Women’s National Team have been set and they are high-profile encounters with Australia and Brazil. Both matches will be presented by Allstate.
The USA will face Australia on April 10 (7:30 p.m. MT on ESPN2) at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, home to the Utah Royals of the NWSL and Real Salt Lake of MLS, before traveling to Northern California to tackle Brazil on April 14 (7 p.m. PT on FS1) at Earthquakes Stadium, home to the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS.
Australia, ranked seventh in the world, features one of the world’s best strikers in Sam Kerr, the all-time leading scorer in NWSL history. Ninth-ranked Brazil is led by former USWNT head coach Pia Sundhage. Both Australia and Brazil made the knockout rounds at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
As part of the agreement that will see the Matildas visit Utah, the USWNT will travel to Australia for a two-match series in November of 2021. Australia and New Zealand are currently bidding to co-host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which will feature an expanded 32-team tournament.

After qualifying for the 2020 Olympics on Feb. 7, these two matches will be the USA’s first friendlies on the road to Japan and will follow the SheBelieves Cup tournament in March. The USA will play four matches across June and July with those games to be announced later.
The most recent meetings with Brazil and Australia came in the lead-up to the 2019 Women’s World Cup with the USA defeating Brazil, 1-0, at the 2019 SheBelieves Cup and downing Australia, 5-3, in a wildly entertaining game on April 4.
The U.S. players are highly familiar with both teams, not only from playing them recently but also because both Brazil and Australia have or had numerous players in the National Women’s Soccer League in recent years.
The USA has faced Brazil 37 times and has won four in a row after not winning in the three matches before that streak (two ties and a loss).
Current Brazil head coach Pia Sundhage coached the USA from 2008-2012, leading the team to two Olympic gold medals (2008 & 2012) and the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final.
The USA has faced Australia 30 times and the last three matches have resulted in one win, a tie and a loss for both teams.
At the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Brazil finished third on goal difference in Group C as three teams went 2-0-1, but that was good enough for a Round of 16 match-up with France, where the Brazilians gave the hosts all they could handle before losing, 2-1, in overtime.
Australia finished second in Group C, earning a Round of 16 meeting with Norway, but fell in penalty kicks.
The USWNT will be playing its seventh game in Utah and sixth at Rio Tinto Stadium where it last played in the summer of 2018, a 1-0 win vs. China PR on a goal from Alex Morgan. The USWNT has never lost in Utah.
This will be the USA’s 11th game in San Jose, Calif., dating back to 1997. The USWNT has numerous players with connections to the San Francisco-Bay Area, either through hometowns or collegiate careers.
The USA have won all previous 10 matches in San Jose, most recently a 4-0 win vs. Chile in Sept. 2018. This will be the fifth match at Earthquakes Stadium.
The USA last played in Australia in 2000, when it traveled to Australia on three different occasions. The USA played a tournament in January in Melbourne and Adelaide, went back Down Under for a tournament in June in Canberra, Sydney and Newcastle, and of course participated in the 2000 Olympics in which the USA played in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.
The USA’s other trip to Australia came in 1997 when it played the Matildas three times, in Melbourne, Bathhurst and Canberra.
