2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup - Group I

Tuesday, November 11 | Aspire Zone; Al Rayyan, Qatar

9:45 a.m. ET on FS2, Universo, Peacock

NINETY MINUTES AWAY FROM MAKING HISTORY

After going down 1-0 in just the third minute, the USA bounced back against tricky Tajikistan, as a result of a Nimfasha Berchimas header in the 30th minute and a Cavan Sullivan penalty strike in the 61st, to earn a 2-1 comeback win on Saturday. With this victory, the U-17 MNT (2W-0L-0D; 6 pts.) officially booked its ticket to the Knockout Round and can now claim top spot in Group I with a draw or win in the group finale against Czechia on Tuesday, Nov. 11 (9:45 a.m. ET; FS2, Universo, Peacock). With a win, Gonzalo Segares’ side would also become the first U.S. team to gain three wins from three group stage matches at the U-17 World Cup.

With the tournament taking on a 48-team format for the first time, the top two teams in each group, along with the eight-best ranked third-place teams, will advance to the expanded Round of 32.

FOURTEEN YEARS LATER, THEY MEET AGAIN

The U.S. and Czechia will for a second time at the FIFA U-17 World Cup to close out Group I. The first meeting in the competition came at the 2011 edition in Mexico, where the te USA defeated its Czech counterpart 3-0 in its tournament opener behind goals from Alejandro Guido, Esteban Rodriguez and Alfred Koroma.

CZECHIA’S HOPES REMAIN ALIVE

Czechia was unable to cement its qualification into the Round of 32, losing 2-1 to Burkina Faso on Saturday. Burkina Faso took the lead in the 27th minute with a goal from midfielder Mohamed Zongo. The advantage was only temporary however as Vit Skrkon – who recorded a hat trick in

the tournament opener against Tajikistan - scored in his second-straight match for Czechia. The African side struck back in the 50th minute, as forward Loukman Tapsoba found the back of the net to regain the lead for ‘Les Étalons' and seal the victory.

In its first match, Czechia battered Tajikistan 6-1 leaving its hopes alive to qualify to the next phase of the competition. While a win would qualify the team directly to the next round, a draw may also do the trick depending on the results from other groups

BREAKING RECORDS IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES

Nimfasha Berchimas continues to shine on one of the brightest stages at the youth level. In the tournament-opening win last Wednesday against Burkina Faso, he became the first U.S. player to play in two separate FIFA U-17 World Cups, having appeared in four games in 2023’s edition in Indonesia. With his 30th minute equalizer against Tajikistan, he became the first Men’s Youth National Team player to score in two separate FIFA U-17 World Cups for the Stars and Stripes, adding four goals to his career total in the tournament - three scores in 2023 and one so far in 2025.

U-17 WC HISTORY

The U.S. has qualified for 19 of 20 U-17 World Cups all-time, the most of any nation. The first edition of the tournament was held in China in 1985 and began as an under-16 competition known as the FIFA U-16 World Championship. The United States earned its maiden win in the group stage, securing a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Bolivia, but ultimately fell short of advancing to the knockout rounds.

In 1991, FIFA adjusted the age restriction to include all under-17 players. The USA has advanced to the knockout stage on nine occasions, achieving its best finish in 1999. That year, the team finished fourth in New Zealand, led by several future USMNT stars, including Golden Ball winner Landon Donovan and Silver Ball winner DaMarcus Beasley. It marked the first time two players from the same team claimed both awards in the same tournament — a feat replicated only once more in the competition’s history. Despite a historic run that saw the U.S. top Group A in the opening phase and defeat long-time rivals Mexico in the quarterfinals, the national team fell to Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation and extra time.
