U.S. Men’s CP MNT Defeats Colombia 2-1 in First International Match of 2025

BUCARAMANGA, Colombia (August 10, 2025) - The U.S. Men’s Cerebral Palsy (CP) National Team defeated hosts Colombia 2-1 Sunday evening under the lights at Estadio Alvaro Gómez Hurtado in the team’s first of three International friendlies to be played this week in South America. Shea Hammond put the USA ahead midway through the first half and Frankie Lowery notched the game-winner with less than 10 minutes to play in the USA’s first game of the year.

The series of matches reflects the Federation’s commitment to the U.S. Way, by investing in resources, infrastructure, and comprehensive support for the Extended National Teams to ensure they are fully prepared to compete and succeed on the world stage.

Colombia was first to threaten when Sergio Castro tested USA goalkeeper Marc Estrella just three minute in from 18 yards out. Not long after, it was Sebastian Leon whose near-post shot went just wide.

The U.S. struggled early in possession, but still got on the board first midway through the first half.

Frankie Lowery stepped past midfield to win a cleared ball and quickly found Jacob Crumbley, who advanced it forward to Shea Hammond. Hammond, who was denied earlier on a nice save by Colombian goalkeeper Jesus Cantero, made a sharp move to his left to pass a defender, then set up his right to rip a hard shot that Cantero could not handle for his 21st career goal.

The lead, however, was short lived, as Colombia answered two minutes later.

Forward Alejandro Chavez did well to create a shot at the top of the box, but Lowery’s lunging effort blocked the effort. The ball fell back to Chavez, who hit another hard shot from 14 yards that Estrella saved, but could not corral. Castro had followed the ball and put the rebound away from close range.

Chavez nearly put Colombia ahead with a clever back heel in front of Estrella, but the ball went wide. Lowery also had a rip from 25 yards that Cantero saved just before the break.

Although Hammond had another turn-and-shoot effort saved early in the second half, the game was mostly balanced.

Midway through the second half, USA head coach Stuart Sharp made two substitutions - and two adjustments. Veteran Adam Ballou replaced midfielder Jake Kaplan for his first cap since November 2023 - and 88th career appearance, and defender Kyle Montgomery came on for Hammond. In addition, left back Lowery stepped forward into the midfield, and midfielder John Sullivan went up top.

The moves paid off.

With less than 10 minutes to play, Crumbley sent a free kick from the team’s own half deep to Sullivan, who controlled and fed the on-rushing Lowery. Lowery stepped into the box from the right and set up his favored left to place the ball past Cantero to the far post for his fourth international goal.

The teams will meet again on Tuesday night and Thursday morning, as the USA continues preparations for October’s IFCPF Copa America in Uruguay.
