RILEY JOHNSON GOAL LIFTS USA TO 1-0 WIN AGAINST ARGENTINA IN MONDAY’S AMERICA’S CUP OPENER
The U.S. Power Soccer National Team utilized a 28th minute goal from Riley Johnson to earn a valuable 1-0 win against Argentina in its second group stage match of the 2025 APFC America’s Cup at Ability 360 on Monday.
The game was a rematch of the Third-Place Game at the 2023 FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup and lived up to the billing. The U.S. was more purposeful in attack, and nearly took the lead just two minutes in as David Dowling’s kick-in from the right found Riley Johnson as he rode towards goal. Johnson’s initial attempt was saved, and Lexi Heer’s follow-up was also turned away off the line by Argentina’s Heber Lopez.Just a minute later, a spin kick from Dowling came back off the right post, leaving relief for Argentina.
The U.S. continued to dominate play through the first half, but a stingy Argentina defense thwarted some quality attacks. With a minute remaining, set piece specialist Pete Winslow emerged from the bench, with his first kick of the match leading to a five-meter infraction against Argentina captain Valentino Zegerelli. That led to a free kick just to the right of goal, where Winslow set up Johnson (pictured below) for a one-time effort that skirted just wide of the post, taking the teams into halftime in a 0-0 deadlock.
An even start to the second half made it seem like the game may not have a goal in it, but the U.S. slowly started to take back control and it finally came in the 28th minute. A combination between Dowling and Johnson on the left led to a powerful spin kick from Dowling that went out for a corner. On the ensuing take, Dowling sent a powerful ball to Heer at the top right corner of the box, where she first-timed it across goal. Lopez made the initial save, but Johnson was there on the doorstep to push it over the line and give the U.S. a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Argentina was called for a two-on-one violation just to the left of goal. On the restart, Dowling swung a kick to Johnson in the box, with the one-time effort well saved by Lopez on the line. After Dowling did well to earn a corner in the 37th minute, he swung a take to Heer at the left post, who again had her one-time shot saved off the line by Lopez.
Argentina tried to press the attack late in search of the equalizer, but a good team performance by Dowling, Heer, Johnson and goalkeeper Jordan Dickey helped the U.S. safely see out the 1-0 win.

JORDAN DICKEY BRACE AND STRONG TEAM EFFORT LIFT USA TO 4-0 WIN AGAINST URUGUAY
The U.S. Power Soccer National Team got a brace from Jordan Dickey and single strikes from Riley Johnson and Pete Winslow to earn a 4-0 win against Uruguay and take its record to 3-0-0 at the 2025 APFC America’s Cup.
In the seventh minute, Riley Johnson did well to ride the end line to earn a corner kick and on the ensuing take, Pete Winslow blasted a cross for Jordan Dickey who powered the opening goal just inside the left post.
In the 17th minute the referee whistleda two-on-one violation against Uruguay just outside the box. David Dowling’s take careened off Johnson, but was turned away by Dario Romano. Dowling then took a swing kick on the rebound, but the ball was put out a second time by the Uruguay goalkeeper.
Another two-on-one violation led to a golden U.S. chance in the 20th minute. On this take, Dowling faked as if he would deflect his kick off Johnson again, but actually changed directions and found Dickey crashing toward goal. His first-timer hit the left post, taking the teams into halftime with the U.S. leading 1-0.
The U.S. maintained control of the match and came close again in the 25th minute as a back-and-forth combo between Dickey and Johnson led to a powerful spin kick from Dickey on the left hand side, but Romano came through to save if off the line again.
In the 31st minute, a lovely touch pass sequence unlocked the Uruguay defense and led to an onslaught of three goals in five minutes. After a recycled free kick, Johnson played the ball for Winslow on the right, but he immediately pushed it back to Johnson. The U.S. center then touched it for Dickey at the left post, who played back across the goal for Johnson to poke home at the right.
The U.S. made it 3-0 two minutes later as Winslow sent a free kick from outside the box into the path of Johnson who redirected past Romano. In the 36th minute, Johnson expertly swung a corner kick from the right for Dickey at the left post, poking home his second of the match and capping the scoring at 4-0.
