CP MNT Opens 2025 Copa America with Historic Win over Upstart Uruguay

PUNTA DEL ESTE, Uruguay (October 11, 2025) - The U.S. Men’s Cerebral Palsy (CP) National Team opened the 2025 Copa America with a historic 15-0 victory over hosts Uruguay, which made its international debut after launching its program six months ago. Seven players scored for the U.S., including four goals from Jacob Crumbley, three from Shea Hammond, braces by Jacob Kaplan, Adam Ballou and Ben Lindau, and solo tallies by Kevin McCandlish and Kyle Montgomery.

The veteran USA side took a professional approach to the match, scoring early and often. Five different players scored within the first 15 minutes, with Hammond and Crumbley completing hat tricks by halftime as the USA took an 11-0 lead into the break. For Hammond, it was his third three-goal game, and first since 2019. Despite the goals, Uruguay’s goalkeeper Facundo Sequeira made four spectacular saves.

The home side settled to start the second half, with a well-established low block. However, the veteran U.S. side found four more goals, including Crumbley’s fourth - a career single-game high. Kevin McCandlish tallied his second international goal, and veteran Kyle Montgomery netted his first-career goal to close out the match.

Per IFCPF rules, the result will be tallied as +10 goal differential in the standings.

The USA will next face Argentina on Tuesday, October 14 to decide Group A. The match will air live on the IFCPF YouTube channel, with kickoff set for 8:30 a.m. ET.

NOTES:

  • The result was the USA’s most goals scored and largest margin of margin in a tournament match. The previous high on both was a 13-0 win over Finland at the 2019 IFCPF World Cup.
  • Hammond’s three goals brings him to 25 career tallies. His previous hat tricks came on October 28, 2018 against Ecuador in the Copa America and against Finland on July 10, 2019 at the IFCPF World Cup.
  • Ballou played his team-leading 91st career match, scoring multiple goals for the first time since a hat trick on August 29, 2019 against Peru at the Parapan American Games.
  • Crumbley registered his third career multi-goal, first hat trick and first four-goal game. He now has 13 career goals in 28 games. His previous two-goal games both came at the 2024 World Cup, scoring twice against Australia and Germany.
  • Kaplan also registered his second multi-goal game. He now has 6 international goals in 27 games. His previous two-goal game was against Thailand at the 2024 World Cup.
  • Lindau made his 42nd appearance and now has eight career goals. His previous multi-goal game was against the Netherlands at the 2024 World Cup.
  • Montgomery scored his first career goal in his sixth match.
  • McCandlish scored his second career goal in his seventh match. He previously also scored against Canada on Nov. 23, 2023 at the Parapan American games.
  • Goalkeeper Marc Estrella started to earn his 28th appearance.
  • Substitute goalkeeper Bonner Rinn made his first tournament appearance after playing in two friendlies against Colombia in July.
