SETUBAL, Portugal (Oct. 28, 2025) – A combined team of U.S. Under-19 Women’s National Team players (born in 2007) and U.S. Under-18 Youth National Team players (born in 2008) drew host Portugal, 3-3, in a wild back-and-forth match to conclude the trip to Europe.
Portugal scored first in the 36th minute before the USA tallied twice in the final five minutes plus stoppage time of the first half to take a 2-1 lead into the break. The teams then combined for three goals in a six-minute span in the middle of the second half with Portugal equalizing, the USA taking the lead and then Portugal equalizing again.
Portugal midfielder Carolina Tristao started the scoring, looping a shot over U.S. goalkeeper Josie Biehl to give her side the lead.
McKeen, who scored the game-winner in the 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland on Oct. 25, then equalized in the 40th minute and put the USA ahead in the first minute of stoppage time to complete her brace.
Portugal forward Matilde Nave tied the game in the 60th minute, running onto a through ball up the middle before finishing, but just three minutes later, Ascanio put the USA ahead on a header from an Anna Babcock cross.
The lead was short-lived as just two minutes after Ascanio’s goal, Portugal’s Cristina Fernandes finished her one-on-one chance for the final scoreline.
For Ascanio, who had seven goals in 19 caps at the U-17 level, this was her first international goal with the U-19s. McKeen upped her U-19 international goal total to three in just two caps.
The USA outshot Ireland 12-7, but Portugal found the net on three of its four shots on goal.
Of the 20 players called up for this roster by U-19 WNT head coach Carrie Kveton, 12 were born in 2008 and eight were born in 2007.
The roster for this trip featured one professional player in Ascanio, one amateur player from the USL Super League in defender Alexa Strickler of Fort Lauderdale United FC and five college players: goalkeeper Lizzie Thornton from Wake Forest, defender Ella Bard from Louisville, midfielders Olivia Belcher and Paige Thompson, both from Alabama, and midfielder Adia Symmonds from Mississippi State. The remainder of the roster represents 11 different youth clubs.
Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2006, are age-eligible for next year’s 2026 FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup in Poland, meaning all 20 players in camp are training and playing for a shot at that tournament.
The camp is part of the Federation’s continued focus on the U.S. Way philosophy, which emphasizes increased programming for Youth National Teams to create more opportunities for young players to advance through the pathway to the senior National Team with the goal of representing their country at a world championship.
