U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team Defeats Mexico, 1-0, to Win 4 Nations Tournament In Mexico City as Nyanya Touray Scores Game-Winner in 69th Minute

MEXICO CITY (Aug. 1, 2025) – The U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team defeated host Mexico, 1-0, in the final match for both teams at the 4 Nations Tournament as attacking midfielder Nyanya Touray scored her third goal of the tournament. It came in the 69th minute after she had come off the bench in the 67th minute to give the USA a spark.
As the USA, Canada and Mexico no longer play each other in Concacaf U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying due to a change in format, this tournament served as a de facto Concacaf U-17 championship ahead of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which will feature all four of these competing countries. In this tournament, the USA drew Canada, before winning in penalty kicks and beat Mexico, while Mexico drew Canada, which won that game in penalty kicks, and fell to the USA. The USA finished with eight points, Canada had six, Mexico earned three and Costa Rica had one.

Mexico, needing a win to take the tournament title, came out with a lot of energy in front of its home crowd, pressing the Americans well and had the better of the first half. Mexico finished with eight shots before the break, a remarkable seven of them on goal. U.S. goalkeeper Josie Biehl was up to the task, however, saving all seven, which included two huge stops.
Each team had two big chances in the first half, the USA’s coming from center forward Lauren Malsom who had two hard strikes on goal, in the 24th and 26th minutes, both of which were deflected away by Mexico goalkeeper Valeria Alvarado. Biehl had to make a kick-save on a close range shot in the 33rd while also parrying a close-ranged blast over the cross bar with a brilliant reaction save deep into first half stoppage time.
Both teams had just three shots in the second half – Mexico put one of those on goal as Peyton Tayer shared the shutout with Biehl – as the young Americans pulled themselves into the aggressor role against a Mexican team that never quit battling. Malsom again had a hard shot saved by Alvardo in 78th.
Once again subs made a big impact. Soon after midfielders Chloe Sadler, Charlee Siria and Touray, and forward Elayna Kocher came on, the USA won a ball at midfield. Halftime substitute Addison Feldman then played Touray behind the Mexico defense into the left side of the penalty area. Touray got behind excellent Mexican center back and captain Berenice Ibarra, then rounded the ‘keeper with a good touch to her left to shoot from a stiff angle at an open goal. A Mexican defender was retreating, and got her foot on the ball, but she could only knock it into her own net from the goal line.
It was Touray’s third goal of the tournament and the fourth of her U-17 career. She also scored the game-winning penalty shot in the shootout victory over Canada in the first match of this tournament.
The goal took a bit of the wind out of Mexico’s sails, and while the Americans controlled the match the rest of the way, they still had to fend off several dangerous set plays, one of which resulted in a blood stoppage for 16-year-old defender Melia Brewer, who had to be treated for a slash on her left cheek.
Mexico had to play the final minutes a woman down after forward Joselyn Solís, who earned a caution in the 77th minute for a hard foul on Feldman, was chirping at the referee in the 89th minute, was shown a second yellow card and was sent off.
The tournament is serving as important World Cup preparation for all teams as each will be competing in the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup later this fall in Morocco. The scheduling of the international matches is a part of the continuing focus on the U.S. Way which emphasizes increased programming for Youth National Teams to create more opportunities for young players to advance through the pathway to the full U.S. Women’s National Team with the goal of representing their country at a world championship.
