Sergiño Dest is off to a hot start in the lead-up to the new Eredivisie season. After PSV topped the league last season, it began the 2025 campaign as winners of the Johan Cruyff Shield. The Dutch Super Cup is played between the league winner and the winner of the national KNVB Cup, Go Ahead Eagles, in a winner-take-all game.

Dest scored the game-winning goal to give PSV the Dutch Super Cup trophy over the Go Ahead Eagles. In the 84th minute, with the score tied 1-1, Dest unleashed a left-footed shot from the middle of the box that soared past the Eagles goalkeeper.

The right back scored his first goal in a PSV shirt since the 2023-24 season when he found the net twice through 25 matches. Dest played seven games last season as he returned from an ACL injury in March 2025, a year after he sustained the injury in March 2024.

Injury has kept Dest, one of the best USMNT defenders, away from international competition for more than one year. Dest was on the initial June friendlies roster before going home to work on an individualized training program as he continued to recover.

If Dest is in good form, he could be a key piece on the 2026 FIFA World Cup team next summer. The U.S. has three more international windows for head coach Mauricio Pochettino to evaluate the talent pool before selecting the final World Cup. So far, the USMNT will face World Cup-bound teams Korea Republic and Japan in September and Ecuador and Australia in October.

The Eredivisie season officially begins this weekend on Aug. 8. PSV, with U.S. internationals Dest and Ricardo Pepi, will be in action Aug. 9 against Sparta Rotterdam.
