San Jose, Costa Rica (February 27, 2025) – The U.S. Women’s Futsal National Team continued the program’s fast start with a convincing 5-0 win over Costa Rica in the teams’ second international friendly Thursday night at the Costa Rican Federation’s BN Arena.

After scoring both goals in Tuesday’s inaugural 2-0 victory, 19-year-old Jeanette Fieldsend added two more goals in the first half, then Sarah Martin, Brianna Harshe and Carlie Banks each added their first international goals after the break. Goalkeepers Ellie Goodrich and Martha Lord again each played a half to combine for a second-straight clean sheet. Harshe was joined by Kelsey Smith and Nicole Grimaldo in making their international debuts.

USA coach Diego Burato made one change from the first shift that started Tuesday’s match, inserting Citlali Luna for Janae Braun, with captain Carlie Banks shifting to fixo.

The match was tightly contested for the first 10 minutes, though it was Costa Rica that tested USA goalkeeper Ellie Goodrich over the first 20 minutes.

However it was the USA that scored first. Janae Braun stepped forward and hit a shot through traffic that clanked off the right post, the ball falling to Fieldsend to put away the rebound from close range.

Fieldsend extended the lead a few minutes later by keeping possession on the left touchline before sending a diagonal ball forward to Paige Pierson. There, she drew the goalkeeper Karen Arrieta and played the ball to the back post to the on-rushing Fieldsend who scored her second on the night and fourth in two games.

Goodrich kept the lead with a fantastic diving save to her left on a hard shot from Ariel Barquero with 40 seconds left in the half.

As in the opening game, Martha Lord replaced Goodrich for the second half, and she also made a big save to deny Barquero. The USA then took control of the game with three goals in a six minute span.

Lord threw a long ball to pivo Sarah Martin, who did well to shield her mark before turning and putting a shot off the right post for her first goal.

Shortly after, Braun took a ball on the left flank and played it centrally to Viet-Thy Tran, who played a beautiful dummy as a defender approached, leaving the ball to continue across for 19-year-old Brianna Harshe to hit a first-time, left-footed low shot past Arrieta for her first goal.

Carlie Banks closed out the scoring, receiving a nice ball on the left from Martin before scooping a shot over substitute goalkeeper Genesis Mendez.

The teams will close out the week of friendlies on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. local time at the Universidad Nacional (CIDE) Gymnasium.
