USMNT Rewind: Pulisic’s scorching form continues, and more from around the globe

Christian Pulisic celebrates after assisting for AC Milan

It was a relatively quiet weekend abroad for American players as many returned to their club sides after competing in October FIFA international window.

AC Milan standout Christian Pulisic continued his torrid start in the Italian Serie A season by recording a match-winning assist. Likewise for Josh Sargent, who set up a goal for Norwich City in the English Championship.

PSV Eindhoven, which boasts four American internationals, remained perfect after nine league matches.

Domestically, 14 players in the USMNT pool will get an opportunity to continue their season in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

HOT, HOT, HOT

Not only did Christian Pulisic register an assist for AC Milan in its 1-0 home victory over Udinese in Italy's Serie A on Saturday, Oct. 19, he recorded a point in his seventh successive match. Pulisic latched onto the ball after Noah Okafor's brilliant run on the left flank. He then shuffled a pass to Nigerian striker Samuel Chukwueze on the right side and the forward drilled a 12-yard strike into the lower left past goalkeeper Maduka Okoye. According to Opta, Pulisic became the first player to record a goal contribution in seven consecutive league matches in the top 5 European leagues this season.

Pulisic has recorded six goals and three assists in 10 games for fourth-place Milan (4-2-2, 14 points), which trails first-place Napoli (6-1-1, 19) by five points.

ASSIST, SARGENT

Josh Sargent is better known for scoring goals than setting them up, but he assisted on Norwich City's lone goal of its 1-1 draw in the English Championship on Saturday, Oct. 19. Ante Crnac put home a Sargent assist five minutes into first-half stoppage time. Norwich (4-2-4, 16) is in seventh place, six points behind first-place Sunderland (7-2-1, 22).

A PERFECT START

PSV Eindhoven continued its hot start to the Dutch Eredivisie season with a 2-1 win at AZ on Saturday, Oct. 19. The team improved to 9-0-0 and 27 points and enjoys a seven-point lead over Utrecht (7-0-1, 22). Midfielder Malik Tillman and forward Ricardo Pepi came on as late-match substitutes. Midfielder Richy Ledezma was on the bench, but did not get into the game. Defender Sergiño Dest is injured.

ANOTHER CHALLENGE

Inter Miami CF and goalkeeper Drake Callender and midfielder Ben Cremaschi got some good news as the MLS Supporters' Shield winners had qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup, which will be held in the United States from June 15-July 13, 2025. Inter Miami, which will kick off the competition, with the opening game, finished the regular season with an MLS record 74 points on the strength of its 22-4-8 record.

FORTUNATE FIFTEEN

14 players will get an opportunity to continue their season in the MLS Cup Playoffs, which begin on Tuesday.

The list included:

  • Goalkeepers Drake Callender (Inter Miami CF), Patrick Schulte (Columbus Crew), and Zack Steffen (Colorado Rapids)
  • Defenders DeJuan Jones (Columbus Crew), Jalen Neal (LA Galaxy), Tim Ream (Charlotte FC), Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati), John Tolkin (New York Red Bulls), and DeAndre Yedlin (FC Cincinnati)
  • Midfielders Ben Cremaschi (Inter Miami CF), Djordje Mihailovic (Colorado Rapids), James Sands (New York City FC), and Timmy Tillman (Los Angeles FC)
  • Forward Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders)

Mihailovic suffered an ankle injury in the Rapids' 3-2 loss at Austin FC on Saturday, Oct. 19. His status for the playoffs is unknown. MLS Cup is set for Dec. 7.
