Versatile Defender Earns First Nomination for Young Player of the Year

A fast, technical and savvy defender who excelled for the Under-20 Women’s Youth National Team this summer, Savannah King has been nominated for the 2023 Chipotle Young Female Player of the Year Award.

The criteria to be eligible for the 2023 Chipotle U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year is any player who has participated in a training camp with any of the USA’s Women’s Youth National Teams during the 2023 calendar year. Players can win the U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year Award only once.

Fans once again have the opportunity to vote for all U.S. Soccer end of year awards on ussoccer.com and at the links below. The fan vote will account for 15 percent of the overall vote tally, with the rest coming from National Team players, coaches, media, and other constituents.

Making the Case for Savannah King as the 2023 Chipotle Young Female Player of the Year:

One of the top players for the U.S. Under-17 Women’s Youth National Team at last year’s World Cup, King moved up to the U-20 WYNT was named to the roster for the 2023 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship.

  • The 18-year-old King started all five games for the U.S. at the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship and played the full 90 minutes in the USA’s final three matches of the tournament.
  • Helped the U.S. defense open the tournament with back-to-back clean sheets as the team qualified for the 2024 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

  • Had a stellar freshman season at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, helping the Tar Heels reach the NCAA Quarterfinals.
  •  An ACC All-Freshman Team and All-ACC Second Team selection, King played a team-high 2,030 minutes for the Tar Heels and was the only freshman to start every match as she anchored a Carolina defense that allowed just 7.4 shots per game.

This is King’s first nomination for Young Female Player of the Year.
