CHICAGO (Oct. 21, 2022) – U.S. Soccer has appointed Tracy Mayer as the new head coach of the U.S. Power Soccer National Team. Earlier this year, the team became an official U.S. National Team as part of U.S. Soccer's Extended National Teams Department.

Power Soccer has been played internationally since 2006 and is the first competitive team sport developed specifically for power wheelchair users.

The USA is 12 months away from competing in the FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup in Sydney, Australia next October. It will be the team’s first competition as an official U.S. Soccer National Team.

Mayer joins U.S. Soccer from the Minnesota Shockwave, a Premier Conference team that’s part of the U.S. Power Soccer Association's robust club development system. Mayer has coached club teams in Minnesota since 2006, winning five national championships (including titles in 2019 and 2022).

In addition to his club coaching experience, Tracy has previously supported the national team in various capacities and has served as a National Tournament Director for USPSA. He also has experience as a referee at the club and international level.

"I'm extremely grateful to U.S. Soccer for allowing me this amazing opportunity to guide this team," said Mayer. "I'm very familiar with our player pool and looking forward to working with our versatile athletes as we prepare for the World Cup in Australia in 2023."

The U.S. Power Soccer National Team features male and female athletes with disabilities that include quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy, among others. The game is played in a gymnasium on a regulation basketball court with four players who attack, defend and spin-kick a 13-inch soccer ball in a skilled and challenging game similar to mainstream soccer.

For more information on the sport or to inquire about athlete eligibility, please contact U.S. Soccer's Extended National Teams Department via email at extendednt@ussoccer.org.
