AUBAGNE, France (June 26, 2022) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s Youth National Team defeated Concacaf foe Mexico, 3-0, in its second match of the Sud Ladies Cup as forward Trinity Byars scored her third goal of the tournament while Korbin Albert and Jaedyn Shaw scored early and late, respectively.
With the victory, the USA puts itself in prime position to win tournament title in its final match, which will be against the Netherlands on June 28. The USA needs a win or a tie against the Dutch to lift the trophy, and can even take first place with a loss, depending on the result of the France-Mexico game. The USA and Netherlands will also face each other in group play at the 2022 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in August.
All the matches are being played in Aubagne, which is located 12 miles east of Marseille in the south of France.
The USA and Mexico met on March 12 in the title game of the 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, a 2-0 win for the USA, and the USA got a strong defensive effort once again in today’s match.
The Americans opened the scoring in the 15th minute after a shot from Ayo Oke bounced off a defender and fell to Albert in the right side of the penalty box. Albert shot high from a tight angle and the ball deflected off the tips of the Mexican goalkeeper’s gloves and into the roof of the net. It was her first international goal at the U-20 level.
The match stayed tight until the 80th minute when Byars, who scored twice in the USA’s 3-1 win over France on June 24, maneuvered through three Mexican defenders to slot the ball low into the right corner.
The USA clinched the match in the 86th minute off a nice sequence of possession with midfielder Alexis Missimo receiving the ball at the top of the penalty box. She then scooped a pass over two Mexican defenders to Shaw who took a touch before nutmegging the ‘keeper. It was Shaw’s second career international goal at the U-20 level.
The matches in the Sud Ladies’ Cup will be the final ones for the U.S. U-20s before head coach Tracey Kevins selects a roster for the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be staged from Aug. 10-28 in Costa Rica. All four teams participating in the Sud Ladies Cup have earned berths to Costa Rica.
The USA was drawn into Group D at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup and opens the tournament on Thursday, Aug. 11 against Ghana, faces the Netherlands on Sunday, Aug. 14 and finishes the group stage vs. Japan on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The U.S. will play its first and third group games at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica and its second group game at the Estadio Nacional in San José.
France is in Group C with Nigeria, Canada and South Korea while Mexico is in Group B with Germany, Colombia and New Zealand.
