CHICAGO (April 21, 2022) – U.S. Soccer has determined the Round of 32 matchups and schedule for the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer's National Championship. Set to take place May 10-11, the Round of 32 pits the 24 winners that advanced from this week's Third Round against eight higher seeded Division I (MLS) clubs. All 16 Round of 32 games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Round of 32 will feature two lower division teams hosting Div. I (MLS) opponents on Wednesday, May 11 when Richmond Kickers (USL League One) welcome Charlotte FC to City Stadium in Richmond, Va., and California United Strikers FC, the lone remaining club from Div. III NISA, host LA Galaxy at Orange County Great Park – Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, Calif.

The Round of 32 will also include an array of intriguing intra-league clashes. USL Championship sides Detroit City FC and Louisville City FC at DCFC’s Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, Mich. and Sacramento Republic FC taking on Phoenix Rising FC at Heart Health Park in Sacramento, Calif. A pair of cupsetters from USL League One will meet when Union Omaha host Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC at Morrison Stadium on the campus of Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. On the Div. I level, all-MLS rivalries to look out for include D.C. United renewing hostilities with New York Red Bulls at Audi Field, in the nation’s capital, as well as Portland Timbers heading down to take on LAFC.

Several lower division sides will hit the road to test their mettle against Div. I opposition. South Georgia Tormenta FC (USLL1) will visit Inter Miami CF at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Rochester New York FC (MLSNP) will head east to Jamaica, Queens for a showdown with reigning MLS champs New York City FC, and San Antonio FC (USLC) will look to knock off a top-tier opponent from the Lone Star State for a second consecutive round when they travel to tackle Houston Dynamo FC at PNC Stadium in Houston, Texas.

HOW ROUND OF 32 MATCHUPS WERE DETERMINED

Teams were pooled geographically into groups of four, with the Division I clubs first entering the competition placed in different groups.  A random draw determined the pairings within each group. Instances where a logical geographic fit didn’t exist in determining the groups were resolved by random selection.

THE CHASE FOR THE CUP

The First Round of the 2022 U.S. Open Cup took place between March 22-23, with an even distribution of teams from various leagues punching their ticket to the next stage. Teams from the Local Qualifying track advanced in five instances, while the same number of USL League Two clubs also earned the right to move on. The NPSL did one better when six of its teams qualified for the Second Round, which saw the introduction of pro teams.

Clubs from professional Div. III leagues: USL League One and NISA, as well as Division II (USL Championship) did very well against the 16 Open Division (amateur) sides in the Second Round, winning 29 of 31 matches, but they were not immune from cupsets of their own as North Carolina Fusion U23 (USLL2) and FC Motown (NPSL) beat Div. III pro sides to reach the Third Round where FC Motown earned the $25,000 award for being the amateur team to go farthest in the tournament. The Morristown, N.J. club finished the tournament with two wins and a Third Round draw to claim the prize ahead of NC Fusion U23, who finished with two wins and a loss in the Third Round.

The 2022 U.S. Open Cup winner will earn $300,000 in prize money, a berth in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League and have its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy – one of the oldest nationally-contested trophies in American team sports – now on permanent display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Frisco, Texas. The runner-up will earn $100,000, while the team that advances the farthest from each lower division takes home a $25,000 cash prize. Atlanta United of MLS are the reigning U.S. Open Cup champions, having won the crown in 2019, the last year the tournament was held before a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
