U.S. U-23 WNT Downs England 1-0 On Goal From Sky Blue FC’s Imani Dorsey

LOUGHBOROUGH, England (Aug. 30, 2019) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated England, 1-0, on a 34th minute goal from Sky Blue FC forward Imani Dorsey to win its second in as many matches at the 2019 Nordic Tournament

The USA defeated Norway 2-0 on Aug. 29 as forward Hailie Mace scored in the first half and forward Simone Charley tallied late in the second.

The USA will now face Sweden on Sept. 2 with the tournament title on the line. All the matches are being played at Loughborough University in Loughborough, England, which is in the center of the country about 45 miles northeast of Birmingham.

The goal game after the USA’s only collegiate player – Emily Fox of UNC -- intercepted a pass and dribbled past two players. She then served into the middle for Dorsey, who shot first-time from near the top of the penalty box to give the USA a first half lead that it would not relinquish.

It was Dorsey’s second goal at the U-23 international level. Casey Murphy of Reign FC picked up her second consecutive shutout for the USA in goal.

The timing of the tournament during the FIFA international dates meant that U.S. head coach B.J. Snow could name a roster of almost all professional players -- 16 from the NWSL and six currently playing in Europe – in addition to UNC defender Emily Fox.

Fox has three caps with the U.S. senior side and four other players on this roster have been called up to the Women’s National Team in the past: Murphy, who started her pro career in France with Montpellier and now plays for Reign FC, midfielder Haley Hanson from the Houston Dash, midfielder Savannah McCaskill from the Chicago Red Stars and forward Mace. Hanson has one senior WNT cap, Mace has three and McCaskill has six.
