The U.S. got on the board early by pouncing on a Surinam mistake. Defender Angel Martinez connected with forward Oliva on a long pass and the Atletico Madrid forward attempted a cross into the box. A Suriname defender attempted to clear but poorly played the ball and it fell to Valdez, who struck it home for the game’s opening goal in the third minute.

Ten minutes later, Valdez added another on a penalty. Oliva was brought down in the area after a nifty dribble around a few Suriname defenders, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Valdez hit the penalty low and slid it into the back of the net to extend the American advantage to 2-0.

After drawing the penalty, Oliva tallied a goal of his own just before the half. On a free kick from just outside the box, he ripped a shot high to the near post past the goalkeeper to give the USA a 3-0 lead at the break.

The USA added one more goal in the 40th minute. Christian Torres, fresh off winning the Golden Boot at the 2019 U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-15 Playoffs, slipped past a defender on the dribble along the top of the box before laying it off for Valdez. The LA Galaxy midfielder sent a high shot towards goal where it bounced down off the crossbar into the net.

The 18-player U.S. roster for the tournament is made up of 17 players born in 2004 and one born in 2005. Sixteen players have spent at least one season in the Development Academy.

Forty-two teams across three divisions are competing at the Concacaf Boys’ U-15 Championship. Division 1’s 16-team field is composed of 14 top-ranked Concacaf nations as well as Portugal and Slovenia, participating as invited guest teams from UEFA. The winner of Division 1’s knockout round bracket will be crowned Concacaf champion.
