USWNT Rewind: Kansas City Current Raises NWSL Shield as Playoff Race Heats Up

As the season turns toward fall, U.S. Women’s National Team players continue to make their mark at home and abroad. From decisive moments in the NWSL playoff race to the season in Europe getting started, USWNT standouts continue to play pivotal roles for their clubs.

Let’s rewind through the biggest USWNT moments over the last week:

Kansas City Current Lift NWSL Shield

The Kansas City Current (17-2-2, 53 points) has been running away with the league’s best record all season and now has the NWSL Shield to prove its dominance in 2025. USWNT players Claire Hutton, Michelle Cooper, Ally Sentnor and Lo’eau LaBonta helped lift the trophy as the Current beat the Seattle Reign FC 2-0 to secure the shield. The Current’s home stadium, CPKC Stadium, will host the USWNT vs. New Zealand on Oct. 29 in the first-ever venue built specifically for women’s sports.

Trinity Rodman, Croix Bethune in Score Wild Match

Trinity Rodman and Croix Bethune’s second-place Washington Spirit entered a battle with No. 11 Angel City FC. With a handful of games left in the regular season and Angel City in a battle for a playoff spot, a 2-2 draw brought the excitement. Rodman scored the first goal after rebounding her own saved penalty kick in the 12th minute. Angel City’s Evelyn Shores scored off an assist from USWNT defender Gisele Thompson. After a Spirit own goal, Bethune notched the equalizer in the 71st minute, preventing Los Angeles from collecting three much-needed points in the table.

Yazmeen Ryan Continues Scoring Tear

Yazmeen Ryan has been on a roll over the past month, and she continued her hot streak with her third goal in five matches as the Houston Dash edged the Chicago Stars 1-0. In the 28th minute, Ryan won a 50-50 ball in the Dash's attacking third, and with numbers on the Dash side, she launched a shot toward the far post. According to Opta, Ryan’s 25 goal contributions across all competitions are the most of any American in NWSL since 2024.

Emma Sears Nets Eighth Goal in 2025

Emma Sears secured her eighth goal of the 2025 season, which keeps her in the hunt for the Golden Boot in a tie for fourth. In Racing Louisville FC's 3-2 loss to the Utah Royals, Sears netted the goal in the 68th minute to put Louisville on the board. While Louisville sits in 10th place in a tight race to make the playoffs in November, Sears remains a bright spot.

Lindsey Heaps Tallies First Goal of Season

It didn’t take long for USWNT veteran Lindsey Heaps to open her 2025 account. The midfielder netted her first goal of the Première Ligue campaign for OL Lyonnes, helping the French side maintain its strong start to the season after coming out on top of the league last season. Lyonnes have played two games so far in the early 2025-26 season and won them both. Heaps scored 13 goals across all competitions for her club in the previous campaign.
