As part of a nationwide effort to create a more respectful and supportive environment for referees, U.S. Soccer is introducing the Green Referee Badge beginning with the 2025–2026 season. This new badge, worn by all certified referees under the age of 18, is a key element of U.S. Soccer’s ongoing #RespectTheCall campaign.

Respect the Call: For Every Referee

Every referee deserves a safe place to work. #RespectTheCall is a movement for all officials—from grassroots to the professional level. The Green Badge is one way of strengthening that culture by helping protect our most vulnerable referees: youth referees, who also make up the largest portion of our referee community.

Why the Green Badge?

Young referees are often the most exposed to sideline pressure and verbal abuse. By providing a clear visual cue that an official is a minor, the Green Badge reminds players, coaches, and spectators to show patience, encouragement, and respect.

If U.S. Soccer is to develop and retain referees who can perform at the highest levels, it must begin by protecting and supporting them at the grassroots level. The Green Badge creates safer spaces for young referees to learn, gain confidence, and stay connected to the game.

What You Need to Know

  • Mandatory for referees under 18: The Green Badge is required for all referees under the age of 18 at the time of certification or recertification.
  • Worn for the full season: Even if a referee turns 18 mid-season, they will continue to wear the Green Badge until the end of that registration year.
  • Shared responsibility: Coaches, players, and spectators are expected to demonstrate respectful behavior—especially toward referees wearing the Green Badge.

Building a Culture of Respect

The Green Badge reinforces U.S. Soccer’s broader commitment to retention, education, and mentorship across all levels of refereeing. Referees are vital to the game’s success, and ensuring that officials of every age feel safe and valued is essential to growing soccer in the United States.

The Green Badge is more than just a symbol—it is a pledge from the soccer community to stand behind referees and to help them thrive.
