USMNT REWIND: McKennie’s UCL heroics, Sargent stays hot, and more

Weston McKennie celebrates a goal for Juventus with teammate Tim Weah
Weston McKennie celebrates a goal for Juventus with teammate Tim Weah

In Italy, Weston McKennie continued to play a vital role in Juventus’ success, scoring off a laser of a shot in a UEFA Champions League win.

In England, Josh Sargent found the net yet again for Norwich City in the English Championship.

In The Netherlands, Paxten Aaronson tallied a goal for Utrecht that helped unseat PSV Eindhoven from the Dutch Eredivisie lead. Goalkeeper Matt Turner also kept things clean for Crystal Palace in the English F.A. Cup.

Cade Cowell, Taylor Booth, Auston Trusty and Alejandro Zendejas didn't score, but they made sure that their teammates did.

Read on for more of the leading highlights for U.S. Men's National Team members last week.

A STUNNER

If Weston McKennie hit the ball any harder, it could have gone through the net. His 18-yard drive from the top of the penalty area helped Juventus to a 2-1 home victory over PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of the knockout round of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, Feb. 18. McKennie's goal was scored off his right foot past goalkeeper Walter Benítez, giving the Italian Serie A side a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. It was his third UCL goal this season and seventh overall. After Ivan Perišić equalized for PSV in the 56th minute, Juve substitute Samuel Mbangula recorded the game-winner in the 82nd.

The second leg is set for Eindhoven on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

A HEADY GOAL

After his three-game scoring streak was snapped in a 1-0 home defeat to Preston North End on Feb. 11, Sargent found the net again for Norwich City in a 1-1 draw at Hull City in the England Championship on Saturday, Feb. 15. The 24-year-old forward scored the equalizing goal as he headed home Kellen Fisher's right-wing feed from point-blank range past goalkeeper Angus in the 49th minute. Interestingly, a squirrel raced down the right flank as the goal materialized.

Sargent has tallied five goals in his last five appearances. Since joining the Canaries in 2022, no one has scored more goals (38) for a Championship side than he has.

Norwich City (11-11-11, 44 points) sits in 12th place, four points away from the promotion playoffs (sixth place).

ANOTHER HEADY GOAL

Paxten Aaronson also got into the act with a header in Utrecht's 2-2 draw at PSV Eindhoven on Saturday, Feb. 15. He timed his run into the area just right, slipping between two defenders, outjumping USMNT's Richy Ledezma to nod Oscar Fraulo's looping right-wing cross past goalkeeper Walter Benítez from seven yards to boost the visitors into a 2-1 edge in the 75th minute minute. It was Aaronson's sixth goal in the Dutch Eredivisie and seventh across all competitions. While third-place Utrecht (12-4-7, 43) could not hold the lead, the visitors made sure that PSV (16-3-4, 52) could not walk away with three home points as it fell into second place behind Ajax (17-2-3, 54).

FOUR HELPERS

Cade Cowell, Alejandro Zendejas, Auston Trusty and Taylor Booth registered assists for their respective teams.

In chronological order:

* Cowell set up Guadalajara's first goal by Fernando Beltran in the 22nd minute of its 3-0 home win over Cibao in the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

* Zendejas assisted on Álvaro Fidalgo's goal in Club America's 3-2 home defeat to Necaxa in Liga MX on Friday, Feb. 14. Fidalgo knotted the match at 2-2 in the 59th minute.

* Trusty, a defender, got an opportunity to contribute to Celtic's 3-0 home triumph over Dundee United in the Scottish Championship on Saturday, Feb. 15. Trusty passed to Jota on the left wing as the Portuguese winger ran toward the box before firing a shot into the bottom right corner for a 2-0 advantage in the 35th minute.

* Despite playing only 12 minutes off the bench, Booth made the most of his limited time in Twente's 2-0 home victory over RKC Waalwijk in the Eredivisie on Sunday, Feb. 16. After replacing Daan Rots in the 78th minute, Booth assisted on Sem Steijn's insurance goal five minutes later.

KEEPING IT CLEAN

In his third appearance of the season, goalkeeper Matt Turner backstopped Crystal Palace's 2-0 win at Doncaster Rovers in the Round of 32 of the English F.A. Cup on Monday, Feb. 10, making four saves. He denied Billy Sharp twice in the encounter. It was Turner's second consecutive shutout in the competition, helping Palace to a 1-0 victory over Stockport County on Jan. 12. He also was in the net for the 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Oct. 24.
