U.S. Men’s Deaf National Team Draws 0-0 With Argentina at Deaf Pan American Games

CANOAS, Brazil (Nov. 11, 2024) – The U.S. Men’s Deaf National Team played to a 0-0 draw with Argentina on the second matchday of the 2024 Deaf Pan American Games. With both teams earning 3-0 forfeit wins against Colombia and level on all tie-breakers, a coin flip was performed to confirm the top team in Group B, which Argentina won.

The match was mostly even throughout, with Argentina having a 6-0 shot advantage in the first half as the teams split possession. And in the second half it was the USA with the advantage, holding Argentina without a shot while creating numerous scoring opportunities of their own.

The most dangerous attempt for the U.S. came with 15 minutes to go in the match after a strong buildup of passes saw a ball drop in the box to second half sub Arthur Goncalves, but his turning shot from about eight yards out was saved in traffic.

On the other end of the field, goalkeeper Erik Jaspers did the work necessary to earn the shutout with one stellar save in the first half parrying a shot from Ricardo Andres Mestre Picon destined for the upper corner out of play.

In the second half he snared a dangerous floating cross that had a chance of falling into the goal, but not before crashing into the far post with his back and falling to the turf, managing to hang on to the ball under pressure.

The scoreless draw made the tie-breaker process go to fair play points, and with each team being shown three yellow cards in the match, a coin flip was performed to determine the group winner, which Argentina won. Confirmed as the second-place team in Group B, the USA now awaits the result of Monday’s Brazil-Mexico clash (12 p.m. ET), in the decisive semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 a.m. ET (9 a.m. local), with the winner qualifying for the 2025 Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan.
