Lynn Williams in action for the U.S. Women's National Team

CHICAGO (July 12, 2024) – NJ/NY Gotham FC forward and 2020 Olympian Lynn Williams has been confirmed by the IOC, the USOPC and FIFA to replace midfielder Catarina Macario on the U.S. Women’s National Team roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Macario is unable to prepare physically for the Olympic tournament due to consistent irritation in her right knee.
Williams, who was originally named to the Olympic roster as an alternate, has been elevated to the 18-player roster and brings 63 caps and 18 international goals to the squad as well as world championship experience having participated in both the delayed Tokyo Olympics and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The all-time leading scorer in NWSL history, Williams was also initially named as an alternate to the 2021 Olympic Team but was added to the active roster when the IOC expanded rosters to 22 players. Williams played in three matches in Tokyo, starting two, and scored and added an assist in the quarterfinals against the Netherlands. She has made four appearances for the USWNT in 2024, all coming at the Concacaf W Gold Cup, and scored one goal.

Defender Emily Sams, who earned her first USWNT call-up as a training player for this camp, will become one of the four alternates and will be added to the game roster for the Impact 99 Legacy Match, presented by New York Life, at Red Bull Arena on Saturday as the USA takes on Mexico, and for the 2024 Send-Off Match, presented by Coca-Cola, on July 16 against Costa Rica at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. will open Group B play at the Olympics on July 25 – one day before the Opening Ceremonies – against Zambia (9 p.m. local / 3 p.m. ET) at Stade de Nice in Nice. The Americans will then travel to Marseille for their second match at Stade de Marseille and will face Germany on July 28 (9 p.m. local / 3 p.m. ET). The USA will finish group play against Australia on July 31 (7 p.m. local / 1 p.m. ET) also at Stade de Marseille. Located in the south for France.
