It was an eventful week for players in the U.S. Men’s National Team players’ pool, which included a dozen standout performances from player across the globe.
Sergiño Dest, Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi (an assist) had plenty to celebrate as PSV Eindhoven clinched its first Dutch Eredivisie crown in six years.
Haji Wright ended his English Championship season on a good note with a goal and an assist in his two matches.
Nashville SC captain Walker Zimmerman experienced a unique win, scoring a goal for each side.
Aidan Morris helped the Columbus Crew reach the Concacaf Champions Cup final with a goal.
Several other players were in a giving mood as Christian Pulisic, DeAndre Yedlin, Alejandro Zendejas and Brendan Aaronson set up goals for their respective sides.
In net, goalkeeper Zack Steffen recorded his second shutout of the season for the Colorado Rapids.
And despite a loss in their final regular season contest, Josh Sargent and his Norwich City teammates will have an opportunity to battle for promotion to the English Premier League.
A BIG DUTCH TREAT
Defender Sergiño Dest, midfielder Malik Tillman, forward Ricardo Pepi and PSV Eindhoven are Dutch Eredivisie champions. PSV won the title for the first time in six years as it recorded a 4-2 home win over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday, May 5. Tillman went the full 90 minutes. Pepi came off the bench in the 77th minute to assist on the hosts' final goal by Jordan Teze only a minute later. Dest is sidelined with an ACL injury. With two matches remaining in the season, PSV (28-1-3, 87 points) has scored more goals (107) and conceded the fewest (19) of any of the 18 Eredivisie sides.
INTO THE FINAL
Aidan Morris started the Columbus Crew on its way to a 3-1 victory at Monterrey with the equalizing goal in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals on May 1. Columbus won the series 5-2, after a 2-1 home triumph in the opening leg. The midfielder tallied four minutes into first-half stoppage time to knot things up at 1-1. Morris intercepted a poor pass by goalkeeper Esteban Andrada, ran toward the penalty area before powering home a 20-yard shot into the lower left corner. Monterrey's Brandon Vazquez came on as a 54th-minute substitute. The Crew will play at Pachuca on June 1.
ONE OF EACH
Haji Wright finished the English Championship campaign with a goal and an assist in his final two matches. He tallied Coventry City's lone goal in its 2-1 home loss to Ipswich Town on Tuesday, April 30. The 26-year-old forward recorded his 19th goal of the season across all competitions. He took a Kasey Palmer pass and fired a low shot past keeper Vaclav Hladky in the 64th minute. On Saturday, May 4, Wright assisted on his seventh goal, on Jamie Allen's score in the 83rd minute in a 2-1 home defeat to Queens Park Rangers. Coventry (17-16-13, 64) finished in ninth place.
BOTH SIDES NOW
Nashville SC center back and captain Walker Zimmerman tallied for both sides in his team's 4-1 MLS home win over CF Montreal on Saturday, May 4. Zimmerman scored his first goal of the MLS campaign, heading home Hany Mukhtar's 21st-minute corner kick to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. In the 65th minute, Zimmerman scored an unlucky own goal. Mathieu Choiniere sent the ball into the box that was intended for Raheem Edwards. The ball, however. deflected off Zimmerman’s foot and into the net past keeper Joe Willis in the 65th minute.
EARLY BIRD
Assisting on a goal from the back doesn't get much earlier in a match than this, as FC Cincinnati right back DeAndre Yedlin set up Luciano Acosta's score only 17 seconds into a 1-0 MLS win at Orlando City SC on Saturday, May 4. Yedlin sent a long ball down the right flank to Acosta, who dribbled through the defense before firing a shot past goalkeeper Pedro Gallese at the near post. It was Yedlin's second assist of the season.
EIGHTH ASSIST
Christian Pulisic's eighth assist of the Italian Serie A season helped A.C. Milan to a 3-3 home draw with Genoa on Sunday, May 5. Playing as a No. 10, Pulisic found Olivier Giroud at the back post as the Frenchman scored off a volley to lift the hosts into a 3-2 lead in the 75th minute. Pulisic, who hit the woodwork during the match, has 10 league goals this campaign.
A COUPLE OF HELPERS
Alejandro Zendejas and Brendan Aaronson set up goals for their respective teams in losses last week.
Zendejas set up Club America's lone score in its 2-1 defeat at Pachuca in Liga MX on Tuesday, April 30. He fed Henry Martin in the 23rd minute.
Aaronson, who came on at halftime, and assisted on Union Berlin's final goal in its 4-3 home loss to Bochum in the Bundesliga on Sunday, May 5. Aaronson's short pass from the left side of the box found Benedict Hollerbach, who scored from close range past goalie Manuel Riemann in the 74th minute.
KEEPING IT CLEAN
Goalkeeper Zack Steffen backstopped his second shutout of the season for the Colorado Rapids, who blanked host New York City FC, 2-0, in MLS action on Sunday, May 5. Steffen made three saves for the Rapids (5-3-3, 18), who equaled their 2023-win total over 34 games.
A LOSS, BUT HOPE
Josh Sargent and Norwich City went down in their regular-season finale, a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City, in English Championship action on Saturday, May 4. However, the Canaries will play at least another two times in the semifinals of the English Premier League promotion playoffs. Norwich City (21-15-10, 73), which finished sixth in the league for the final playoff berth, will host Leeds United on Sunday, May 12 before visiting its rivals in the second leg on Thursday, May 16. The winner will meet the victor of the West Bromwich Albion-Southampton series in the playoff final on May 26. Sargent played 82 minutes on Saturday.
STILL IN THE RUNNING
Gianluca Busio, Tanner Tessmann and Venezia still had hopes of gaining automatic promotion to Italian Serie A after the team registered a 2-1 win over Feralpisalo in Serie B on Sunday, May 5. Third-place Venezia (21-9-7, 70) needs to defeat host Spezia, while second-place Como (21-7-9, 72) must lose to visiting Cosenza for the former to move on up, in the final regular season matches for both squads on Friday, May 10. The top two Serie B teams will move up to the first division, while third through sixth-place teams will battle for a spot in the promotion playoffs.
GOING DOWN
Eupen and goalkeeper Gaga Slonina were demoted from the Belgian Pro League after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Kortrijk, another relegated side, on Sunday, May 15. Eupen, (7-10-3, 24), which finished 14th out of 17 teams, registered only one win in its final 13 matches. Slonina, an Olympic team hopeful, is expected to return to Chelsea, which had loaned him to Eupen.
