U.S. U-20 Women’s Youth National Team Downs Korea Republic 3-0 in First of Two Matches in Los Angeles

CARSON, California (May 31, 2024) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s Youth National Team defeated Korea Republic, 3-0, on goals from defender Jordyn Bugg, Seattle Reign FC forward Emeri Adames and Florida State forward Giana Riley. All three goals were the first international scores for the players at the U-20 level.

The USA got on the board in the 18th minute after the Koreans couldn’t clear a U.S. corner kick. Midfielder Claire Hutton’s shot was blocked and the ball was then kicked up in the air by a Korean defender. Defender Savy King headed it to the left flank to midfielder Riley Jackson, who played Adames down the left wing. Her well-struck service on the ground skipped all the way to the far post where Bugg, a central defender who was still in the attacking third after the set play, slid to finish into the left corner from three yards out.

The USA had a golden chance to double the lead in the 68th minute after Adames was chopped down in the left side of the penalty area by Chaebin Hong, but forward Ally Sentnor missed the penalty kick, clipping her shot off the top of the crossbar.

The USA didn’t wait long to find the net, though, as Adames ran onto a long pass down the left wing from Ally Lemos and struck a cross from near the sideline that flew over South Korea's keeper Seobin Woo and settled into the goal in the 71st minute.

The USA finished the scoring one minute before the end of regulation time as forward Maddie Dahlien collected a throw-in on the left wing, fought off a tackle and raced up the left sideline past two defenders. She then played a pass inside to Sentnor who fed Riley, a halftime sub, into the right side of the penalty area. Riley finished first-time high into the net from 10 yards out.

The U.S. starting lineup featured six professional players, and including halftime sub Ally Lemos (Orlando Pride), the U-20s played seven NWSL rookies in this match in Jackson (North Carolina Courage), Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC), Sentnor (Utah Royals), King (Bay FC), Hutton (Kansas City Current) and Adames (Seattle Reign FC).
