U.S. U-20 Women’s Youth National Team Defeats Colombia, 1-0, in Bogotá on Second Half Stoppage Time Goal from Forward Pietra Tordin

BOGOTÁ, Colombia (Feb. 25, 2024) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s Youth National Team defeated Colombia, 1-0, on a 92nd minute goal from substitute forward Pietra Tordin.

In the first of two matches against Colombia in Bogotá on the road to the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Colombia, the USA played an excellent match in front of a large crowd at Estadio El Campin, home to Colombia First Division clubs El Millonarios and Santa Fe.

The young Americans controlled the pace of the match throughout and kept pushing for a goal until the end. In the 91st minute, substitute midfielder Lauren Martinho, who came on in the 78th minute, ran onto a short pass from forward Taylor Suarez at the top of the penalty area and bent her shot towards the lower right corner. Colombia goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo made a brilliant save, pushing the ball off the left post with a fully extended dive. The ball rebounded behind her but was then cleared.

That set the stage for some heroics from Tordin, a Princeton Tiger who hails from Florida who came into the match in the 69th minute. The USA earned a throw-in deep on the right sideline and it went to 65th minute substitute forward Kat Rader, who received the ball, spun towards goal and slipped a pass into the penalty area for Tordin, who won the ball from a defender with a fair shoulder charge. She then evaded two defenders with a crafty dribble centrally before finishing smartly into lower left corner with her left foot from about 12 yards out. The final whistle blew soon after.

The goal was Tordin’s first international score in her first U-20 cap. The match also marked the U-20 debuts of midfielder Sam Courtright, defender Heather Gilchrist, goalkeeper Mackenzie Gress, who earned the shutout, former U-17 WYNT captain Riley Jackson and forward Giana Riley.

The U.S. lineup featured four professional players in Jackson (North Carolina Courage), Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC), Ally Lemos (Orlando Pride) and team captain Ally Sentnor (Utah Royals).
