USMNT REWIND: Americans Assist Clubs ahead of Concacaf Nations League Quarterfinals

Several members of the U.S. Men's National Team played vital roles in victories for their teams prior to the upcoming Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals series with Trinidad & Tobago.

Sergiño Dest and Malik Tillman teamed up for a goal in another win for PSV, Joe Scally picked up an assist in a victory for Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Aidan Morris and Jordan Morris helped their respective teams to advance in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The Americans host the Soca Warriors in the first game of a home-and-home series in Austin, Texas on Thursday, Nov. 16 before playing in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Monday, Nov. 20. The winner of the series will advance to the CNL semifinals next year and will book a spot in Copa América 2024, which will be played in the United States next summer.

TEAMING UP

Sergiño Dest and Malik Tillman combined for the final goal in PSV's 4-0 win over PEC Zwolle in the 78th minute on Sunday, Nov. 12. Dest played a major role in the goal-scoring sequence with three passes, the final one going to Tillman. Tillman, who entered the match in the 70th minute, then slotted home the ball from eight yards on the left side past goalkeeper Jasper Schendelaar.

PSV, which defeated Lens, 1-0, in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Nov. 8, recorded its third consecutive shutout across all competitions. The team leads the Dutch Eredivisie with a perfect 12-0-0 mark and 36 points, seven ahead of second-place Feyenoord (9-1-2, 29).

RIVALS, THEN TEAMMATES

One day you’re rivals, the next day you're teammates. That's the situation for Borussia Mönchengladbach's Joe Scally and Wolfsburg's Kevin Paredes. Only a day after it was announced they were called to the U.S. roster for the CNL, they were on either side of the pitch in a Bundesliga encounter on Friday, Nov. 10. Borussia prevailed, 4-0, as Scally played 90 minutes and registered an assist on Alassane Plea's goal in the 71st minute, the final score of the match. Paredes played the final 23 minutes, coming on for Vzclav Černy in the 67th minute.

STILL ALIVE AND KICKING

Aidan Morris and Jordan Morris advanced to their respective conference semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Aidan Morris set up Malte Amundsen's 30-yard strike past goalkeeper Brad Guzan, which lifted the Columbus Crew into a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute. The team went on to secure a 4-2 home win over Atlanta United in the third and deciding game of its Eastern Conference quarterfinals series on Sunday, Nov. 12. After the international break, Columbus will meet Orlando City SC in the semis on Saturday, Nov. 25.

In Game Two, Caleb Wiley assisted on Atlanta's final goal of its 4-2 home victory on Tuesday, Nov. 7. He fed an onrushing Thiago Almada on the left flank. Almada then slipped the ball over goalkeeper Patrick Schulte from close range in the 88th minute.

Jordan Morris and his Seattle Sounders reached the Western Conference semifinals, defeating FC Dallas at home, 1-0, on Friday, Nov. 10. Seattle won the best-of-three series, 2-1. Morris played the entire way but did not score. FC Dallas forward Jesús Ferreira was ruled out of the match at the last minute due to a lower body injury. Seattle hosts Los Angeles FC, Kellyn Acosta and Timmy Tillman on Sunday, Nov. 26.

BOTH SIDES OF THE COIN

In a span of less than a week, Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers experienced the lows and highs of 6-0 results. On Tuesday, Nov. 7, his Scottish side lost by that score at Atletico Madrid (Spain) in the UEFA Champions League. On Sunday, Nov. 12, Carter-Vickers celebrated a 6-0 victory against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership. He played the full 90 minutes in each match.
