Tate Lancaster, Chris Bourdon Score as Men’s Deaf National Team Falls 3-2 to Egypt at Deaf World Championships

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Sept. 25, 2023) – The U.S. Men’s Deaf National Team rallied with second half goals from Tate Lancaster and Chris Bourdon, but ultimately fell 3-2 to Egypt in its second match of the 2023 Men’s World Deaf Football Championships at Padang UITM Stadium on Monday. Despite the defeat, the USA remains in strong position to advance to the Knockout Round heading into Wednesday’s group finale against Germany.
Following an even first 30 minutes, Egypt got on the board when a centering pass deflected of USA defender Kevin Fitzpatrick and past Erik Jaspers to take the African side into halftime up 1-0.
After Jaspers was judged to have pulled down an attacker in the box, Egypt went up 2-0 in the 56th minute as Mohamed Hamed Abdelhay beat the U.S. goalkeeper from the penalty spot.
The USA made it 2-1 in the 68th minute as Chad Johnson’s free kick from 25 yards was initially saved by Egypt ‘keeper Gamal Saber before Tate Lancaster poked home the rebound.
As the U.S. continued to press numbers up the field, Egypt restored its two-goal lead with Maher Taman tallying in the 80th minute.
Chris Bourdon cut the deficit back to one goal in the 87th minute. A long ball was played to Michael Schmid who flicked on a header into Bourdon’s run on the left, allowing the winger a finish toward the far post.
The U.S. pushed forward late in search of the equalizer, and nearly found it when a scramble in the box led to Thomas Salvi’s shot that careened off the crossbar in what was the last big chance of the match.
The result combined with Germany’s 8-0 defeat of Malaysia on Monday see the USA move down to third in Group A. The top three teams in each group, along with the best fourth-place finisher, advance to the Knockout Round.
Next Up: The USA will look to bounce back in Wednesday’s group stage finale against Germany at 8:30 a.m. ET (8:30 p.m. local time). The match is expected to stream live via the Malaysia Deaf Sports Association’s YouTube Channel.
