For the eighth time in history, Olympique Lyon are champions of Europe! Lyon won the 2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League on Saturday, May 21, beating 2021 champions Barcelona, 3-1, at Allianz Stadium in Turin, Italy. Lindsey Horan and Catarina Macario, who both played the full 90 minutes for Lyon in the action-packed final, became the fourth and fifth Americans to win the UEFA Women’s Champion League, joining Alex Morgan, who won the title in 2017 with Lyon, and Ali Krieger and Gina Lewandowski, who lifted the trophy with FFC Frankfurt in 2008. Macario made even more history when she scored off a tap-in at the back post in the 33rd minute, becoming the first American – male or female – to score in a Champions League Final. It was Macario’s ninth goal overall in the 2021-22 Champions League campaign and eighth in the main tournament phase, good for third among all scorers this season.

Horan and Macario will have the opportunity to add another trophy on Sunday, May 29, when Lyon takes on rivals Paris Saint-Germain on the penultimate match day of the Ligue 1 Féminine season. OL sits atop the table and five points ahead of PSG with just two matches left to play.
In the NWSL, San Diego Wave FC’s three-game winning streak to start the season came to a close on Wednesday evening as it fell to Racing Louisville FC, 1-0, at Louisville’s Lynn Family Stadium. Emily Fox and Jaelin Howell both played the full 90 minutes for the hosts, who picked up their first win of the 2022 NWSL regular season. The Wave quickly bounced back with a 1-0 win over the North Carolina Courage on Sunday, May 22, to maintain their early lead atop the league table. Morgan tallied her league-leading sixth goal of the season in the 41st minute, breaking in behind the Courage defense and slotting a left-footed finish past Courage goalkeeper Casey Murphy for the game’s only score.

Murphy, who recorded two clean sheets for the USWNT during the 2022 SheBelieves Cup before being sidelined by injury, made her season debut for the Courage on Wednesday, registering a pair of saves in North Carolina’s 2-1 loss to the Orlando Pride.
Angel City FC made it wins in back-to-back games to remain second in the league standings following a 1-0 win over the Kansas City Current on Saturday evening. The game’s lone goal came in the 70th minute when Christen Press did well to keep the ball in play for Angel City and played a cross into the area that careened off the KC defender and into the net for an own goal.
Racing Louisville registered its second consecutive win with a 1-0 road victory over NJ/NY Gotham FC on Sunday, extending its unbeaten streak to four games in a row.
Portland Thorns FC made it three unbeaten to start the season, playing the Washington Spirit to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Providence Park. Sophia Smith gave Portland the lead in the 57th minute, dashing down the right wing and finishing with her right foot for her second goal of the regular season.

Just six minutes later, reigning NWSL Golden Boot winner Ashley Hatch scored the equalizer for Washington, getting on the end of a flighted ball into the area and heading home her second goal of the regular season.

Portland’s unbeaten start came to an end on Saturday as it fell to the visiting Houston Dash, 2-0, while the Spirit picked up another point on the road Sunday, playing OL Reign to a scoreless draw.
There was no shortage of offensive firepower in the final game of the weekend which saw the Chicago Red Stars beat the Orlando Pride, 4-2. Sidelined for several weeks under concussion protocol, Mallory Pugh returned to the field for the Red Stars and made her impact felt nearly immediately. After subbing on at the half, Pugh tallied an assist on Chicago’s goal in the 54th minute and then added goals of her own in the 64th and 86th. Pugh’s first goal of the game came from the top of the box, creating space herself before ripping a low right-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

She found the back of the net again in the 86th minute, cashing in on her own rebound following a saved penalty kick.
