USMNT REWIND: Ferreira, Arriola Goals Lift FC Dallas; Pulisic Bags Assist; Roldan and Morris win CCL
James Sands and Rangers Through to Europa League Final; Aaron Long Scores Third of the Season for RBNY
Jesús Ferreira continued his hot start to the MLS season and Paul Arriola chipped in with an insurance goal for FC Dallas on Saturday.
The U.S. Men’s National Team pair produced their magic in the second half of Dallas' 2-0 home win at Toyota Stadium.
Ferreira's seventh goal of the season - which tied him for the league lead - lifted the hosts into the lead in the 65th minute. After a nice build-up, Ferreira finished Ema Twumasi's cross from the right with a 14-yard shot into the bottom right corner. Ferreira, who has 25 MLS goals in 91 appearances, surpassed his father David's total of 24.
The 2010 MLS Most Valuable Player, David Ferreira did his scoring in 113 matches with Dallas from 2009-13.
Arriola gave Dallas some much-needed breathing room in the 88th minute. Jader Orian played a ball to Nanu, who crossed it from the right flank to Arriola at the back post, where the USMNT winger one-timed his shot past goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland for his second goal of the campaign.
HELPING OUT
Christian Pulisic set up Chelsea's second goal in its 2-2 home draw with Wolverhampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Earning his first start since March 5, the 23-year-old gathered a deflected Wolves pass in the midfield and quickly sent the ball to Romelu Lukaku, who struck his second of the game in as many minutes from the top of the box to increase the advantage to 2-0 in the 58th.
The Blues, however, could not hold the lead, surrendering a 79th minute strike to Trincao, before Conor Coady found the Wolves’ equalizer in the seventh minute of second half stoppage time.
Sebastian Lletget collected his second assist of the MLS season in the New England Revolution's 2-2 home draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday.
The 29-year-old midfielder picked up a loose ball on the left flank and sent a curling cross to Adam Buksa, who headed home from six yards, to give the Revs a 2-0 advantage in the 82nd minute.
THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris celebrated the Seattle Sounders' Concacaf Champions League triumph as the club became the first MLS side to win the competition on Wednesday, May 4.
The Sounders recorded an emphatic 3-0 triumph over Pumas UNAM in the CCL Final second leg before a home-record crowd of 68,741 at Lumen Field in Seattle to win the aggregate-goal series, 5-2.
Although the USMNT duo did not figure in the scoring during the second leg, they played key roles in the team's march to the confederation title, each earning a place on the CCL Best XI. Both players appeared in all eight matches during the tournament run, with Roldan contributing one goal and five assists, while Morris registered a goal and three assists.
The Sounders will represent Concacaf in the FIFA Club World Cup next year.
FINDING THE NET AGAIN
It's only May, yet center back Aaron Long already has three goals this year, two in MLS action. The New York Red Bulls' captain latest tally came in a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers at home on Saturday.
The 2018 MLS defender of the year equalized in the 67th minute. Tom Edwards sent in a corner kick from the left side that was headed down by Dylan Nealis to the feet of Long, who fired a shot into the near corner.
Long, who has scored 10 league goals in his career, also has a goal in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this season.
INTO THE FINAL
James Sands could earn a second title on as many continents in five months. Sands' Rangers defeated RB Leipzig, 3-2, on aggregate, to reach the Europa League Final after producing a 3-1 home win on Wednesday, May 4. Rangers dropped a 1-0 road decision at Leipzig on April 28.
Sands, a member of the 2021 MLS Cup champion New York City FC that was secured on Dec. 11, and midfielder Tyler Adams (Leipzig) did not feature in the match.
Rangers will meet Eintracht Frankfurt for the title in Seville, Spain on Saturday, May 14. The winner will qualify for the group stage of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.
Sands played the full 90 minutes in Rangers’ 2-0 win over Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday, May 8.
SOME TOUGH INJURIES
Atlanta United center back Miles Robinson suffered a non-contact injury to his left leg in the 18th minute of his team's 4-1 home win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday. Robinson was stretchered off in the 14th minute. On Monday, Atlanta United confirmed Robinson suffered a ruptured achilles on the play, with the veteran center back set to undergo surgery on Monday afternoon.
Swiss Super League scoring leader Jordan Pefok was subbed out in the 34th minute after incurring an apparent injury in Young Boys' 3-1 defeat at Lugano on Saturday.
Pefok has 22 goals, four more than Zurich's Assan Ceesay, with three matches left. He has 27 across all competitions.
