U.S. Women’s National Team Will Face Colombia For June Friendlies In Commerce City, Colo. And Sandy, Utah

First Match Presented by Allstate at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on June 25 (5:30 p.m. MT on FS1 and ViX) and Second at Rio Tinto Stadium on June 28 (8 p.m. MT on ESPN and Univision Networks); Games Will be Final Two Before Concacaf W Championship Kicks Off in July

CHICAGO (April 21, 2022) – The U.S. Women’s National Team will meet Colombia in two June friendly matches which will be the final games before the USA enters qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Olympics at the Concacaf W Championship which will be contested July 4-18 in Monterrey, Mexico.

The first match will take place on June 25 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado (7:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. MT on FS1 and ViX) and will be presented by Allstate. The teams will travel to Salt Lake City to meet at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah on June 28 (10 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. MT on ESPN and Univision Networks).

Colombia is ranked 26^th in the world and second in South America behind long-time power Brazil. The matches against the USA will serve as preparation for Colombia for the 2022 Copa América Femenina which it will host from July 8-30 in three cities -- Armenia, Bucaramanga and Cali. That tournament will send three nations directly to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and two more countries to the 10-team intercontinental playoff tournament.

“Colombia has a good chance to make it to the World Cup and both teams will be in our final preparations for our qualifying tournaments, so I expect some highly competitive matches between players who are competing to represent their countries in some really important games,” said U.S. head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “When we get to Colorado, we’ll be coming off a stretch of more than two months that the players have been with their clubs and away from the National Team environment, so we’ll be looking to get maximum value out of our last days and games together before we go to Mexico for qualifying.”

The USA’s World Cup and Olympic qualifying campaign will feature first round games against Haiti (July 4), Jamaica (July 7) and Mexico (July 11) in Group A play, with the top two teams from each group automatically qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the tournament winner automatically qualifying for the 2024 Olympics. The second and third-place finishers will square off for the second and final Olympic berth from Concacaf in September of 2023.

These will be the USA’s ninth and 10^th matches all time vs. Colombia and the USA holds a 7-0-1 record against Las Cafeteras, with the only draw coming during a 2-2 tie at the 2016 Olympics.

The teams most recently met in a pair of friendlies in January of 2021 as sports started to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. The USA won 4-0 and 6-0 in matches played in Orlando, Florida.

Catarina Macario earned her first cap in the first of those matches and scored her first international goal in the second. Margaret “Midge” Purce also second her first international goal in the second game while Samantha Mewis bagged her first international hat trick in the first game.

Colombia had quite a run during the aughts, participating in the 2015 and 2019 Women’s World Cups and the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

The USWNT has three regular call-ups who are Colorado natives in Lindsey Horan (Golden), Mallory Pugh (Highlands Ranch) and Sophia Smith (Windsor). In addition, midfielder Jaelin Howell (Windsor) also hails from the Centennial State.

Forward Ashley Hatch, who has participated in every USWNT event since the November 2021 friendlies in Australia, played collegiately at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and earned her first USWNT cap in Sandy, Utah in October of 2016.

The USA has played six matches all-time at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, home to the 2021 MLS Western Conference champions Colorado Rapids, most recently a 5-3 victory over Australia on April 4, 2019, a match in which Pugh scored twice in front of her hometown crowd.

The USWNT held a training camp in Commerce City in October 2020, the team’s first event following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The opening of Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, in the fall of 2008 for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer also opened that market to U.S. Soccer, and the U.S. Women have played there five times previously, most recently June 7, 2018, in a 1-0 victory over China PR.
