The lineup against Portugal features one change from the Starting XI that took on France in Le Havre in the USWNT’s most recent outing on April 13 with Lindsey Horan starting in the midfield in place of Julie Ertz, who is not in camp while recovering from an MCL injury.
The starting lineup averages 117 caps per player with six of the 11 starters having 100+ caps and every starter having more than 50 caps.
Captain and center back Becky Sauerbrunn will be making her 185^th appearance for the USA in the match against Portugal, good for 14^th in USWNT history. Sauerbrunn was the only USWNT player to play all 270 minutes of the 2021 SheBelieves Cup and is second on the team with 540 minutes played in 2021.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher is set to earn her 70^th cap and make her sixth start of 2021. Naeher is the third-most capped goalkeeper in USWNT history, trailing just Hope Solo (202) and Briana Scurry (175). Naeher also ranks third with 40 career shutouts and has posted a clean sheet in 11 of her last 12 appearances for the USWNT.
Kelley O’Hara will make fifth start of 2021 and is set to earn her 137^th cap overall. This will be the third consecutive start of the year for O’Hara, who played the full 90 minutes in each of the USA’s last two games and drew the game-tying penalty kick on April 10 against Sweden.
Abby Dahlkemper will make her 67th appearance for the USWNT tonight, which will also be her 60^th start in 67 caps. Against Portugal on Sept. 3, 2019, Dahlkemper became 59th female player in U.S. history to play in 50 or more games. Dahlkemper led the USA in total minutes played in both 2019 and 2020 and has played in all but one match for which she has been available during her USWNT career.
Crystal Dunn will make her seventh appearance and sixth start of 2021 with tonight’s match against Portugal, pushing her overall cap total to 112. Dunn will have now played in 37 of the USA’s 41 games since the start of 2019, making 35 starts over that span.
Lindsey Horan continues to close in on the 100-cap milestone and will make her 94^th international appearance with tonight’s match against Portugal. Horan has appeared in every game for the USA so far in 2021 and is tied for the team lead with four assists this year. She has tallied at least one goal or assist in 10 of her last 15 appearances for the USA, with eight goals and seven assists during that span.
Samantha Mewis will make her second consecutive start and fifth appearance of the year. Dating back to the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, Mewis will have now started seven of the last eight matches in which she’s been available for the USA, tallying three goals and an assist during that stretch. Mewis is second on the team in scoring in 2021 and has 21 career goals. This will be her 73^rd cap for the USWNT.
Rose Lavelle will earn her 54^th career cap and will make her ninth consecutive appearance for the USA, becoming the only player to appear in every USWNT match since the resumption of play in November 2020. This will be the sixth start and eighth appearance for Lavelle in 2021. Lavelle has accounted for two of the USA’s eight game-winning goals since the resumption of play in November 2020 and has four goals in her last 14 outings for the USWNT. Prior to that, Lavelle had scored four goals in her previous 21 appearances for the USA.
Christen Press will earn her 145^th cap tonight and will make her fifth consecutive start. Press has now started seven of the last eight matches for which she has been available. Press is in the middle of one of the finest stretches of her career as she has been directly involved in 30 goals in her last 32 games for the USWNT, scoring 13 goals with 17 assists.
With 60 career goals and 39 career assists, Press is just one goal or one assist away from becoming the 14^th player in U.S. history with a combined 100 or more goals and assists in her international career.
Alex Morgan will make her third start of the year and sixth appearance overall in 2021, while earning her 176^th cap overall. Morgan played a hand in both goals in the USA’s 2-0 win over France on April 13 their last time out, drawing the penalty kick to set up the opening goal in the fifth minute and adding a score of her own in the 19^th. Morgan’s goal was her second of 2021 and her second since giving birth to her daughter Charlie in May 2019.
Megan Rapinoe enters the match against Portugal – which will be her 176^th appearance for the USA – in the midst of the longest scoring streak of her international career, with goals in each of the last four games. In fact, Rapinoe leads the USWNT in scoring with seven goals in 2021 and has scored five goals over the last four games, beginning with her second-half score in the USA’s 2-0 victory over Brazil in the 2021 SheBelieves Cup. The last USWNT player to score in five or more consecutive games was Christen Press, who scored in six straight games over the final two games of 2019 and through the first four games of 2020.
Rapinoe has 59 career goals, passing Carin Gabarra for 11^th all-time in USWNT history. She is one score from tying Shannon MacMillan and Christen Press – both of whom have 60 goals -- for 9^th on the USWNT scoring charts.
