Following a successful collective effort in the USA’s 2-0 win vs. Netherlands on Nov. 27, the U.S. Women’s National Team players competing in Europe returned to action and played a role in victories with their respective clubs this weekend.

FA Women’s Super League leaders Manchester United entered the weekend unbeaten in all seven league matches to open the 2020-21 campaign and unbeaten in their last 11 WSL games dating back to January. The Reds continued their winning ways with a 2-0 victory on the road against Aston Villa. USWNT forward Tobin Heath started and played all 90 minutes in the victory, creating a team-high six chances. Christen Press was unavailable for Manchester United.

Sunday’s action also saw Tottenham Hotspur come away with its first WSL victory of the season, beating Brighton & Hove Albion, 3-1. Alex Morgan iced the victory for Spurs with a coolly converted penalty kick in the 84th minute. It was
Morgan’s first goal since signing with Spurs and her first goal in any competition for club or country since scoring the game-winning goal in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup semifinal vs. England on July 2, 2019. It also marked her first goal in all competitions since giving birth to her daughter in early May.

Morgan was subbed off in the 85th minute and finished the match with a game-high four shots.

Manchester City was also picked up three important points on Sunday, beating Everton 3-0 in a rematch of the 2020 FA Women’s Cup Final. Rose Lavelle made the start for City – her second in league play – and was subbed off at the half with the Cityzens leading 3-0. Fellow USWNT midfielder Samantha Mewis came on in the 65th minute and created a pair of chances.

Manchester City returns to midweek action on Wednesday, taking on Swedish side
Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC on Wednesday in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 32. The return leg will be played in Manchester on Dec. 16. U.S. Women’s National Team defender Emily Sonnett helped Göteborg win the league title this season but has returned stateside following the conclusion of her short-term deal with the Swedish champions.
