All six U.S. Women’s National Team players currently competing abroad saw action in a busy weekend of competition, headlined by Emily Sonnett clinching the Swedish league title and Alex Morgan making her Tottenham Hotspur debut.

On the penultimate matchday of the season, Sonnett helped her club Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC to a 7-0 victory over Linkoping and in the process secured the club’s first league title. The 2020 Damallsvenskan champions, Göteborg improved upon runner-up results each of the previous two seasons and is now unbeaten in its last eight league matches, allowing just one goal over that span. Sonnett, who joined the club in August, has made nine appearances and played the full 90 minutes once again in Saturday’s historic victory.

Saturday morning also saw Morgan maker her Tottenham Hotspur debut, subbing on in the 69th minute of Spurs’ 1-1 draw vs. Reading. This marked the first action in 445 days for club or country for Morgan, who signed with Tottenham
in September as she continued to work her way back to fitness following the birth of her daughter last May. A minor injury setback delayed her much-anticipated Spurs debut, but her appearance on Saturday marked her first minutes since August 21, 2019, during the Orlando Pride’s 2-1 win over the Chicago Red Stars. She has not appeared for the USWNT since the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final.

Coming off their FA Cup win the previous weekend, Manchester City kept its momentum rolling in a 3-0 midweek victory over Liverpool in the group stages of the League Cup. Rose Lavelle scored the second goal of the game for City in the 52nd minute, subbing on at halftime to replace her fellow USWNT teammate Samantha Mewis. Lavelle, who scored her first goal for the club in the Cityzens 3-1 League Cup win over Everton on November 1, made a darting run to the near post to get on the end of a slotted ball back across the area from England international Lucy Bronze. Both Mewis and Lavelle saw action in Manchester City’s 8-1 victory over Bristol City, the club’s largest margin of victory in the FA Women’s Super League this season.

Manchester United – whose midweek League Cup match at Everton was postponed due to field conditions – moved to the top of the Women’s Super League standings with a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Arsenal on Sunday. Tobin Heath and Christen Press earned the start for the Red Devils and showcased their attacking prowess throughout the match, creating several dangerous opportunities in the attack. Press nearly put Manchester United in the lead in the 28th minute, forcing Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger into a fine save. Press and Heath continually challenged the Arsenal defense until they were subbed off in the 71st and 77th minutes, respectively. English youth international Ella Toone scored the game’s lone goal in the 83rd minute, vaulting Manchester United to the top of the table with 16 points through six matches.
