With club seasons in Europe getting back underway, this week’s episode of The U.S. Soccer Podcast saw hosts Jordan Angeli and Charlie Davies welcome well-traveled former U.S. Men’s National Team defender Oguchi Onyewu.
The stalwart center back reminisced on a professional career which saw him play 13 seasons across seven different European countries and share locker rooms with the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Ronaldinho and Andrea Pirlo, among many others. Well-seasoned in the European game, Onyewu gave his thoughts and advice to the young, exciting crop of USMNT players currently plying their trade overseas.
A veteran of 69 international caps, Onyewu discussed his National Team career at length, from his first cap (and what he thought should have been his first goal), his play in the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, the famous 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup run and his unforgettable stare down with Mexican striker Jared Borgetti.
Close friends during their USMNT days, Onyewu and Davies then discussed how their relationship grew as they rehabbed together – Onyewu from a patellar tendon injury and Davies from the unfortunate car accident that ended his international career.
