On this week’s episode of The U.S. Soccer Podcast, hosts Jordan Angeli and Charlie Davies welcomed former U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Shannon Boxx to the show.
The trio look back on Boxx’s 12-year career with the USWNT, which began later than most at the age of 26. The first uncapped player to be named to World Cup roster, Boxx made her debut with the WNT in 2003 and within two years was named a finalist for the 2005 FIFA World Player of the Year.
A three-time Olympic Gold Medalist, and 2015 World Cup champion, Boxx ranks 12th in USWNT history with 195 caps, the most by any Black player – male or female – in U.S. Soccer history. Her longevity and success came despite battling lupus and Sjogren's syndrome – two autoimmune diseases – throughout her career. Boxx opens up about battling the disease while competing at the highest level and how sharing her story actually helped extend her career.
Boxx closed the conversation discussing the trials and triumphs of transition to life after soccer and her continued involvement in the game as an investor in NWSL expansion side Angel City.
