On the evening of Sept. 23 at the famed Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy, FIFA held its annual Best Football Awards and the U.S. Women’s National Team was well represented. Megan Rapinoe was named The Best FIFA Women’s Player for 2019 while Jill Ellis was named The Best Women’s Coach. In addition, five players – Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Julie Ertz, Rose Lavelle and Kelley O’Hara -- were named to the FIFA FIFPro Women’s World11. FIFPro has named Women’s World11 for the past four years, but this is the first year the Women’s World11 has been honored on stage at the FIFA awards.
Following are quotes from Italy from Rapinoe, Ellis, U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro, Morgan, Ertz. Lavelle and O’Hara.
“Wow… What an Incredible honor. First and foremost, I want to thank my family, friends, and Sue for being there for me every step of the way, from way back when I was a teenager, driving me hundreds of miles to soccer practices and games, all the way to today. Their support means so much to me. They have stuck with me through the tough times, provided laughter when I needed it, the tough love when I need it, and the cheering when I needed it.
“I want to thank all my teammates, our entire coaching staff who worked so hard this year, our amazing medical staff and in particular our fitness coach Dawn Scott who has been a rock and who has believed in me for all these years. I wouldn’t have received this award without them.
“This World Cup perhaps more than any other was such an incredible team effort on so many fronts that I feel like I’m accepting this award on behalf of the team. Having five players in the World 11 is a testament to the quality we have all over the field so congrats to Alex, Julie, Rose and Kelley, as well the rest of this incredible team.
“I feel like I’m still a kid from a small town in Northern California who always just loved playing the game, so this is very surreal, but also just as I have dreamt for all these years. I also want to congratulate Alex and Lucy. I feel like any one of us could have won this award and it would have been deserved, so a huge credit to them and all the other nominees.”
