CHICAGO (July 25, 2019) – The U.S. Men’s National Team will face fifth-ranked Uruguay on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in St. Louis in the USA’s final match before the start of the Concacaf Nations League, a tournament that will help determine qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET), and the match will be broadcast live on FS1, Univision and TUDN. The USMNT takes the field at Busch Stadium for only the second time, following the 6-1 win against St. Vincent & the Grenadines in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier on Nov. 13, 2015.
“We look forward to this challenge against an excellent Uruguayan team. They possess a mixture of top-level offensive difference makers and experienced defenders that have competed on the world stage for years,” USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter said. “Part of the development of our team is being able to consistently compete against teams with the profile of Uruguay. In the National Team we also speak about the importance of tradition, and St. Louis has one of the great soccer legacies in the United States. We look forward to adding to that history in September.”

ST. LOUIS NATIVES
Since the start of the 2022 World Cup cycle, the USMNT has received contributions from a pair of St. Louis natives. Fulham-based defender Tim Ream has represented the United States a total of 35 times in international competition, including starts in five of six matches in the USA’s run to the final of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Former St. Louis Scott Gallagher striker Josh Sargent won the Silver Ball as the second-leading scorer at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup and captained the USA’s U-17 World Cup team that same year. Now at Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga, the 19-year-old has appeared eight times for the senior USMNT, scoring two goals.
URUGUAY ALL-STARS
Meantime, Uruguay boasts an array of stars representing club champions from Spain, Italy and France. Their attack is led by Luis Suarez (FC Barcelona) and Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain), who have combined to score 106 goals for La Celeste. The Uruguayans reached the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, falling to eventual champion France.
HISTORY WITH LA CELESTE
Holding an even 2-2-2 record, the match in St. Louis marks the seventh all-time meeting between the two nations and first in 17 years. An early powerhouse of international football, Uruguay was already four-time Copa America champions by the time of the first meeting with the USA at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. Playing just its fourth-ever international match, the USMNT fell 3-0 that day to a Uruguay team that would go on to win the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup and take its second title 20 years later in Brazil.
The teams last met in a tune-up for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, with the USA using goals from Tony Sanneh and DaMarcus Beasley to earn a 2-1 victory against La Celeste on May 12, 2002 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
USMNT IN THE ‘LOU
The match marks the USMNT’s second game in nearly 20 years in St. Louis, which for generations was widely considered the soccer capital of the United States and the team’s unofficial home. St. Louis has produced a host of USMNT players over many generations and is home to 10-time NCAA men’s champion Saint Louis University, where Ream played his college soccer.

Prior to the win against St. Vincent, the USA last played to a 0-0 draw with Paraguay at Busch Conference & Sports Center (now World Wide Technology Soccer Park) on June 4, 1997.
The USMNT is 6-1-2 all time in the city of St. Louis (5-1-1 in World Cup Qualifiers) and is 8-1-2 in the state of Missouri.
