LA MANGA, Spain (March 3, 2019) -- The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team dropped its second straight 3-2 decision at the Women’s U-19 La Manga Tournament 2019, falling to France in the second of three matches in Spain.

The USA fell 3-2 in a tight contest to Germany on March 1 and will face Sweden in its final match on March 7.

Like its match against Germany, the USA started slowly, giving up a goal in just the 2nd minute, but equalized in the 26th. Forward Jordan Canniff sprinted into the penalty area with a defender on her hip and as she neared the goal line, she played a pass on the ground through the penalty area. Isabella D’Aquila made a run to the near post, and with a defender in tow, redirected the ball past the goalkeeper.

The USA gave up an unfortunate own goal in the 54th and France made it 3-1 with a nice finish in the 74th.

The USA responded right away, pulling a goal back just a minute later as Coriana Dyke headed home a loose ball from 10 yards out.

The 20-player U.S. roster is made up of 11 players born in 2000 (which is the age cut-off year for the next Women’s World Cup), eight players born in 2001 and one in 2002. Nine players on the roster were a part of the USA’s 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Team and three – defender Naomi Girma, midfielder Brianna Pinto and forward Alexa Spaanstra – were a part of the USA’s 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Team and return for their second U-20 cycle. The roster is a mixture of collegiate and youth club players with seven already enrolled in college.

The friendly competition – which consists of players born in the same birth years as the U.S. team – features 14 countries. In addition to the USA and its three opponents, China, Denmark, England, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland will also participate.
