PORTLAND, Oregon (March 27, 2019) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated host Portland Thorns FC, 1-0, in the second of its three games at the 2019 Thorns Spring Invitational.

The USA fell to Reign FC, 2-1, on March 24, and will finish the friendly competition against the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. PT. Portland wraps things up with a match against rival Reign FC at 7:30 p.m. PT.

The USA’s lone goal came after defender Kiara Pickett was taken down in the penalty box. Forward Catarina Macario, who scored all four of the USA’s goals at this tournament last year, stepped up and buried the penalty kick. The U.S. defense, anchored by the back line of Schuyler Debree, Kaleigh Riehl, Naomi Girma and Emily Fox, who captained the team, held fast to keep the Thorns off the board the rest of the way. Amanda McGlynn picked up the shutout in goal for the USA.

The Thorns were playing without numerous international players away on National Team duty, including four with the full U.S. WNT.

U.S. head coach B.J. Snow named a roster that features 21 collegiate players, two players current playing professionally in Europe – Debree (Sparta Prague in the Czech Republic) and Martha Thomas (Le Havre in France) – and one U.S. Soccer Development Academy player.

The U.S. Under-23s are taking part in Thorns Spring Invitational for the third year in a row. All the matches take place at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland. The competition takes place over three matchdays, with an early game that has free admission and a later match featuring the Thorns that is a ticketed event. Tickets for the matches featuring the Thorns are general admission. Individual tickets are on sale to the public online at www.thornsfc.com.
