CHESTER, Pa. (Feb. 27, 2019) – The England Women’s National Team defeated Brazil by a score of 2-1 in the opening game of the 2019 SheBelieves Cup on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Talen Energy Stadium.

Brazil got on the board first when six-time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year Marta raced into the penalty area in the 15th minute and won a penalty kick as she eluded the charging Steph Houghton and was taken down by Lucy Bronze. Goalkeeper Carly Telford jumped to her left but the shot from Andressa on the ensuing penalty kick went straight down the middle to put Brazil up 1-0.

England equalized in the 49th minute after Fran Kirby slipped a pass into the left side of the penalty area for an on-rushing Ellen White. On her first touch 12 yards from goal, White struck her left-footed shot past goalkeeper Aline, off the far post and in to pull England level. It was White’s 27th international goal in 76 caps.

Kirby again provided the assist in the 75th minute with a short pass out to Beth Mead on the right flank. Mead took a touch to settle then smashed a right-footed shot over Aline and into the far side of the goal for the game-winner. For Mead, the goal was just her third for England and it came in her eighth cap.

The match was the opening game of the doubleheader, the second of which features the United States vs. Japan at 7 p.m. ET on FS1.

The SheBelieves Cup continues on Saturday, March 2 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., when Brazil takes on Japan (1 p.m. CT on ussoccer.com) followed by the USA vs. England (3:30 p.m. CT on FOX). The final games take place on Tuesday, March 5 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., with Japan vs. England (5:15 p.m. ET on ussoccer.com) followed by the USA vs. Brazil (8 p.m. ET on FS1).
