NaTIONAL TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • A dominant force in the middle of the field, Ertz is the only player to win the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year and then win the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year twice, which she did in 2017 and 2019.
  • On April 8, 2023, Ertz was honored for her 100th cap, which she earned against England on March 5, 2020, right before the global pandemic shut down sports. Ertz entered that match against Ireland in the 67th minute, which marked her first cap in 611 days and her first appearance for the USWNT since the bronze medal match of the Tokyo Olympics.
  • Named to the FIFA FIFPro Women’s World XI in both 2015 and 2019.
  • A two-time Olympian, Ertz played in two games at the 2016 Olympics and in 2021, returned from a knee injury earlier in the spring to play in all six matches in Tokyo, starting five, and played the second most minutes in the tournament with 525 while helping the USA capture the bronze medal.

PREVIOUS WORLD CUP EXPERIENCE

  • A two-time Women’s World Cup Champion, Ertz helped lead the USA to the 2015 title playing as a central defender and the 2019 title primarily in central midfield.
  • Played every minute of all seven games during the 2015 World Cup, assisted Carli Lloyd’s game-winning goal in the quarterfinal against China and was named to the FIFA WWC All-Star Team.
  • In 2019, she started all six games in which she played at the World Cup, logging 474 minutes and earning high praise for her two-way performance. Scored her lone goal of the tournament and her first World Cup goal on a spectacular header off a corner kick against Chile in the second Group F match.
  • Captained the USA team that won the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan and was awarded the Bronze Ball as the third-best player in that tournament.

CLUB HIGHLIGHTS

  • Drafted No. 3 overall by the Chicago Red Stars in the 2014 NWSL Draft and played with the club through the 2021 season. Made 95 regular season appearances for the Red Stars, helping the club finish NWSL Runners-Up in 2019 while collecting NWSL Rookie of the Year honors in 2014 and NWSL Best XI recognition in 2015.
  • Had her rights traded to Angel City FC in December of 2021 prior to the NWSL Expansion Draft and made her debut for the club in April of 2023.

PERSONAL

  • Daughter of Kristi and David Johnston, she has one sister, Melanie.
  • Began her National Team career playing under her maiden name before marrying her husband, Super Bowl winning NFL tight end Zach Ertz, in 2017.
  • Julie and Zack welcomed their first child, a son named Madden, in August of 2022 and Julie returned to the field for the USWNT eight months, playing in the April 2023 friendlies against the Republic of Ireland.
  • In 2018, she started the Ertz Family Foundation with Zach with a mission of empowering others by sharing faith, learning through sports and advancing education to build supportive communities, with the goals of transforming lives through faith, hope and love.
  • Majored in Communications at Santa Clara where she was an All-American and Herman Trophy Semifinalist for the Broncos.
