#OTD 1993: U.S. snatches 1-0 win against Jamaica in 1993 Gold Cup opener

The U.S. MNT began its defense of their inaugural 1991 Gold Cup championship with a match at The Cotton Bowl in Dallas against Jamaica.

In the 24th minute, the U.S. team nearly took the lead when Roy Wegerle ran onto a long ball out of the back and got past goalkeeper Warren Barrett before seeing his shot cleared off the line by Reggae Boyz midfielder Anthony Corbett.

Jamaica had a close call of their own in the 40th minute. A quick one-two combination put Winston Anglin in alone on goal, where he beat the onrushing Tony Meola, but saw his effort come off the right post before Walter Boyd fired the rebound wide of the goal.

The U.S. would take the lead in the when a punt from Meola was flicked on by Wegerle for Eric Wynalda, who chipped over Barrett in the 67th minute.

Three minutes later Thomas Dooley rattled his header off the post, but the U.S. was able to hang on for a 1-0 victory.

U.S. MNT Lineup:
